Our favourite week is upon us once again, that’s right, it’s International Coding Week. Instead of simply explaining what coding actually is, we thought we would get our lovely developers to tell you what their favouite coding languages are and why!
However, if you do want to know a little more about what coding is, take a look at one of our previous blogs on coding.
First up, it’s our resident ph(p)abulous Digital Developer, Ali.
Ali – PHP
PHP is one of the most popular languages in the world of web development. Its estimated that 77% of websites run on PHP in some form.
It has a very interesting name which has a recursive initial “PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor”.
I like PHP as it’s quite a simple language to understand, but difficult to master. There’s also continuously countless improvements made by a dedicated community to make it more secure, faster and better with each update. What more could you want!
PHP’s Mascot is also the Elephpant. Which objectively makes it the best programming language.
Learning PHP might seem like a massive tusk, but you would be wise to learn it. It will be worth it, honestly!
On to our jolly Javascript loving Junior Designer, Jason!
Jason – Javascript
I confess, I have a love-hate relationship with Javascript. I love what it can do and the additional tools it can give me to design and animate websites. On the other hand, it can break without reason and you could end up spending many a frustrating hour trying to fix a tiny bug. Why do I still rave about Javascript? Because it can build beautiful, animated websites that build upon a companies branding to breathe life, movement and personality into every corner.
There have been times after I finish coding an element with Javascript when I find myself just playing around with it for a good while as it is so satisfying and enjoyable to watch and interact with! Italian 3D Artist, Flilippo Bello – filippobelli.com has an impressive website that showcases excellent use of Javascript and is a perfect example of bringing a website to life with animation for Javscript.
So it might not be perfect, but for me, Javacript is bellisimo.
Next up, it is our our sc(ss)andously good digital developer, Russell.
Russell – SCSS
Everyone and their dog knows that CSS means Cascading Stylesheet and this is what I have chosen as my favourite coding language, it’s what makes your sites all look so good. But what is this added S on top of the CSS? Is it SuperCSS? StupidCSS? SimpleCSS? Well, it actually stands for Sassy CSS!
This just means that it is based upon SASS which stands for Syntactically Awesome Stylesheet. SASS and SCSS are both preprocessors and there are lots of reasons why it makes CSS even better than it already is. Things like Variables, Nested syntax and Mixins and all kinds of stuff that I won’t go into right now. (But if you want a blog on this, just let me know!) So just take my word for it, SCSS is great.
Last up is our newest Developer, the lovely Wiktoria, who squeals in delight at coding!
Wiktoria – SQL
I will be the first to admit that my choice will be boring to many, but while in college, I quickly started to appreciate the Structured Query Language (SQL). It is commonly used within databases to store, manipualte and retireve data.
Many large companies such as Microsoft and Dell make use of SQL to handle their databases as it is fast, efficient and no advanced coding skills are necessary to be able to use it. It’s commands are created using common English phrases, making it easy to comprehend and memorise. It is also popular for how seamlessly it works with other languages, making it easy to implement within web applications.
It was one of the first languages I ever came across and really appreciated how easy it was to run a command and see the results straight away. It is a great starting point for anyone who wants to learn to code! But the big question is, is it pronounced SQL or sequel…
