Work Experience at YCD

I’m Jason Cracknell. I am 18 years old and left school just last year. I have always loved drawing and doodling, and in secondary I got really into digital art and wanted to be able to have a career in the field, and now I am here at Yellow Cherry just about to finish my 8 weeks of internship and start an apprenticeship which I am over the moon about.

When I finished secondary I knew I didn’t want to go to university, I just didn’t feel like it was right for me, I was however very interested in apprenticeships. The idea of being able to learn while I got real experience in the field sounded great to me. So after finishing secondary I took a gap year and started creating lots of artwork in my free time, while looking for work and where to go next.  Sadly I hit a streak of just unlucky situations which meant I didn’t get a job, but now I look back on it and I am glad I did not get a job, as then I wouldn’t have been led to Yellow Cherry Digital.

While looking for a job I got onto a course at Barnardos which helps people find work and through their course, I was brought to Yellow Cherry who were kind enough to let me do some work experience with them, and I loved it.

Since the work I wanted to do was along the design side, I did a lot of work with Sarah, the Creative Director, and Ruairidh, their Digital Designer. Up until now the art have created was along the more traditional side, your painting, portraits and figure drawing. However, since Yellow Cherry does a lot more graphical design art, a lot of what I was learning was very new to me. Luckily I wasn’t hopeless as lot of what I knew could and was applied to what I was doing. Since I knew my way around Photoshop pretty well, I do feel the other Adobe software then came to me much more easily. There was a lot I didn’t know and when it came to the things I didn’t know the team at Yellow Cherry were more than happy to help me out, support me and teach me.

Yellow Cherry Digital is a fantastic place to work. The whole team is kind and supportive. Not only am I grateful for the opportunity they presented me, but I’m also grateful that they want to bring me onboard and teach me so much more. Yellow Cherry is an amazing team and if you get the opportunity to do work with them, take it, you won’t regret it and they will be able to support you through any help you may need.
