Meta’s Updates: New Ad-Free Subscription & Extra Fees

Meta’s New Ad-Free Subscription: Why Advertisers Must Stay Opted In

Meta is introducing a new “consent or pay” model across the UK and EU.

From 4 March 2026, Facebook and Instagram users must choose between:

– Using the platforms for free with personalised ads, or

– Paying a monthly subscription to remove ads completely

While this may sound like a simple privacy option, it has important implications for businesses running Meta advertising.

Why This Matters for Advertisers

If an account chooses the paid, ad-free subscription, advertising features are disabled.

This means:

1. You cannot run ads

2. You cannot boost posts

3. You cannot run partnership or branded ads

4. Advertising tools are disabled across linked accounts

Because this applies at account level, if an admin or connected account selects the subscription, it could interrupt active campaigns or prevent ads from running.

For businesses currently advertising on Facebook or Instagram, this could unintentionally pause your marketing activity.

What You Should Do

If your business runs (or plans to run) Meta ads, you should remain opted in to personalised advertising, the free version of the platform.

This ensures:

– No disruption to active campaigns

– Continued access to advertising tools

– Ongoing optimisation and targeting capabilities

Still Evolving

These updates are very new, and some details are still emerging.

For example, one of our clients recently had to confirm their ad preferences directly through Instagram. This action could not be completed through Meta Business Suite, Ads Manager, or Facebook, because the accounts were linked.

We expect Meta to continue refining how these settings work.

Additional Update: Location Fees on Ads (From 1 July 2026)

Meta will also introduce location-based fees on ads delivered in certain countries to cover Digital Services Taxes and other regulatory costs.

Key points:

Fees are based on where your audience is located, not where your business is based. They are added after ads are delivered and are separate from campaign budgets.

VAT or other taxes may still apply.

Austria 5% | France 3% | Italy 3% | Spain 3% | Türkiye 5% | United Kingdom 2%

Example:
If £100 of ads are delivered in Italy, a 3% fee (£3) will be added, bringing the total to £103 before VAT.

Our Recommendation

If you are running Meta advertising, do not select the ad-free subscription on any account connected to your ad activity. If you’re unsure how this change may affect your setup, speak to us before making any changes. We’re closely monitoring these updates to ensure our clients’ campaigns continue running smoothly.
