Fin(al)l(a)y time to hear from an intern!

We recently welcomed Finlay, a local, Inverness-based secondary school pupil into our studios for a some work experience across 6 weeks. We caught up with him on his experience.

Hey Finlay, can you introduce yourself?

“Hi, I’m Finlay Hamilton and I’m in my last year of school. With five free periods on a Thursday morning spare for private study, I decided to set about finding some work experience with Yellow Cherry.”

Have you always had a creative interest?

“When I was younger I was always learning new art forms and finding ways to potentially make some money. I’ve always been into my creative subjects, rather than social or academic subjects which mostly involved me doodling in the page margins. One of my recent creative projects is my part-time hobby/business: Wyvis Studios. I design and sell slate products for both individuals and businesses.”

Amazing, do you have plans beyond your time at school?

“Once I leave school this year, I plan to go to university to study marketing as well as continuing to run the business part-time and expanding the product range.”

Where did your interest in marketing come from?

“I developed my interest around marketing through taking Graphic Communication in school which sparked my interest for designing as well as documentaries showing the in-depth and creative process companies use to influence their customers. Recently this year I also took part in our school Young Enterprise managing the social media which developed the interest further.”

What did you take away from your experience?

“I came to Yellow Cherry with zero experience using Adobe Software, and a very basic marketing plan for my business. However after working with Amy, the Marketing Assistant I was taught the in-depth methods of using Meta for Business and creating a marketing plan. This helped me identify the opportunities and competitors for my business and the target market for my social media. I also worked with Jason, the team’s Graphic Designer to create some social media templates to use on my Instagram. I was excited by this because I got to learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator and get access to graphics and fonts from Envato.

I would definitely recommend the work experience to other students looking to go into graphics or business subjects in future. “

How did you find the team?

“The team at Yellow Cherry were lovely to work with and created a nice environment to work in… the music in the office was also really good taste!”

Why Yellow Cherry?

“Although I looked for a suitable opportunity at many different places, upon finding the Yellow Cherry website, I was sure it was the one. I loved the modern branding with the gradients and was very impressed with the portfolio, especially the Duke of Edinburgh website.”

It’s great to hear about Finlay’s experience, and also to invest in local young people, which is part of the wider Yellow Cherry values! Interested in collaborating with our team on a project? Get in touch!
